Welcome Pamela, Grant, and boys!

Photo for Welcome Pamela, Grant, and boys!

A year has flown by and Paul, Devon, and I want to welcome the new owners of our farm. Pam, Grant, Todd, Neil, Adam, and Graham are now officially the new Christmas tree farmers at Cedar Hill. Paul and I have moved to Almonte and are enjoying this lovely little town. Pam and Grant have been very involved in getting ready for the 2016 Christmas season. The trees are looking beautiful and Christmas giftware is arriving shortly. Hannah, Levi, and Mara have been pruning with Paul. We have kept a good supply of Popsicles in the shop freezer ...a great treat at the end of a hot day. The Christmas shop will be opening in just three months with with wonderful decorations and fresh green wreaths. To see photos and past posts, click on more news.

We welcome farmers from the Netherlands

Photo for We welcome farmers from the Netherlands

We were pleased to host a tour with farmers from the Netherlands today for two reasons. We enjoy every opportunity to show our beautiful Christmas tree farm to visitors .. a great way to promote our "Grown in The Ottawa Valley" business. The second reason is very personal.....I enjoyed using my Dutch to welcome and speak with this wonderful enthusiastic group. Yes, it was a little rusty and peppered with some Canadian words, but it was OK! The next stop will be our neighbours at Fulton's Pancake House and Sugar Bush for a tour and delicious lunch. Spring planting

Photo for Spring planting

It's that time of year again...spring planting of beautiful little Christmas tree transplants!! Paul drove the tractor, Hannah and Ria were on the planter wearing rainsuits to keep dry, and Devon kept us supplied with trees. Levi and Devon had a tough job straightening the trees and tamping them firmly into the soil. Grant and Pamela Martin will be moving to our farm in August and are very involved in decision making. Grant came for the weekend to learn the planting process and he was a huge help with all jobs. We probably ate too many goodies this weekend. Emmy's brownies, cookies, and butter tarts were a real treat!! Now we need a good rainfall to nourish the trees. Select 'More news' to see a picture of our planter.

A Rooftop Christmas Tree

Photo for A Rooftop Christmas Tree

We are so pleased to be part of the movie 'A Rooftop Christmas Tree' being filmed in Almonte this month. Today the crew filmed several scenes at our farm. Our rustic workshop with all of Paul's tools, workbench and machine parts seemed to be perfect for the story line. Scenes were also shot on our covered bridge and in our Christmas tree field. Paul and I wonder what the Forsythe pioneers who settled our farm in the 1820's would have thought of all this activity. Click on "more news" to see a photo and read past posts.

With only 7 days to Christmas we are very excited about our wonderful supply of beautiful Christmas trees, freshly made wreaths, and decorations. You will never get a fresher tree than one from our farm. Emmy has been baking more of the best butter tarts in the Valley and her outstanding brownies. Our chilli, soup, and hot dogs are delicious, and the hot chocolate is very popular. Our bunnies will be going to new homes on Monday, so this weekend is your last chance for a cuddle. What a wonderful day we had at our farm today! The cut your own trees coming from the field were so beautiful. It was a pleasure to see so many familiar happy faces coming into our shop, and to meet new visitors who wanted to share in our Christmas traditions. Our bunnies were cuddled all day, and I am always amazed at the gentle way they are held. It was a beautiful day to linger inside and out.

Our son John came to help us in the wreath shop for the weekend. It really was a special day. Please click on "more farm news" to see photos and past news.

Great News!

Photo for Great News!

Paul and I are excited to announce that Cedar Hill Christmas Tree Farm has been sold to Pamela and Grant Martin from Ethel, Ontario. They will take over the farm in August 2016. In the meantime, Paul, Devon, and I feel fortunate to have one more Christmas to share with you. Pamela and Grant and their four young sons have owned and operated a large dairy farm in Ethel. This move to our farm is a homecoming for Pam. She grew up in Cedar Hill and is the daughter of Shirley Fulton Deugo and the late George Deugo, owners of Fulton's Pancake House. We will continue to work with Pam and Grant through the coming year so that the changeover is a smooth one. Although the decision to retire from the farm was a difficult one, we could not have found a more suitable and eager family to continue the tradition of celebrating Christmas in the Ottawa Valley. Welcome Pam, Grant, Todd, Neil, Adam, and Graham! ( for photos and other posts, click on more news)

Christmas 2015

Although no one is thinking Christmas with this wonderful Fall weather, I have to admit the Ralph family has to plan and organize the coming season so that we will be ready for all of the Christmas activity. Paul has been pruning and tagging trees while I have been opening boxes of decorations and gifts which we ordered in January. Organizing how we are going to display all of our beautiful purchases is very creative. So many items have arrived....Cider Keg drinks, new hats and mitts, ribbon for wreaths, and many beautiful new tree and home decorations. Hannah has been busy trimming tops of trees, while Devon is getting equipment maintenance done. Our gift shop will open daily from November 13-20 for early shopping and wreaths. We do have hot drinks and cookies for early birds. Then from November 21 to December 24 our shop and restaurant will be open daily from 9-5. In December, we will be open until 8pm on Wednesday and Thursday.

It is not all work and no play at our Christmas tree farm. Rory, Grady, and Crosby came for their annual vacation. Lots of frogs were caught, the sprinkler was going strong, and a few visits to Scoops in Pakenham cooled us down. The boys were joined by Callum, Jacob, and Max for supper and some more fun at the Indian Creek under our covered bridge. It was a great week!! Now it is time for "jamming" for the Christmas season.

Can you picture a day of work at our farm? Hot, humid days, horse flies zipping around, bright sunshine, and operating electric and gas pruners all day....that is the job at our farm right now. In spite of all this, Paul and his crew are cheerful and proud of their results. The trees are looking beautiful for the coming Christmas season. Hannah brought Paul a delicious rhubarb pie for his birthday today....best rhubarb pie we have ever had!!

Summer at Our Farm

Our summer work at the farm is in full swing. Paul, Devon, and Hannah have finished cutting and clearing stumps which remained from our December harvest. Doing this job was important because it makes the fields safer for walking next Christmas and also keeps fields and trees healthier. Devon will be stump grinding and working the fields. We have also been deconing trees. Cones are beautiful now, but by Christmas, they start to fall apart and detract from the beauty of our trees. Soon we will be starting our pruning. Tree growth right now is quite soft and very beautiful, but to prune, the growth must be firm and more mature. I have been mowing and gardening, and our farm looks so beautiful and green. Sometimes I stop the tractor just to look around and enjoy the beautiful colours, listen to sounds of the birds and creek, and to breath in the wonderful fresh country air. I often wonder what the Forsythe pioneers would say to us about our farm operation today.

We have had a great summer with family and friends and now our thoughts turn to Christmas. The Christmas tree pruning is almost finished thanks to Hannah, Emmy, Molly, and Paul. Our trees are lush and green after plentiful rainfalls. Our Christmas decorations and gift have started to arrive and that is always exciting for us. In August, photographer Cheryl Baxter and I flew over the farm to capture some aerial photos. It was truly a great experience which we would both repeat in a heartbeat. Thanks to Chris Dunning from Clayton for taking us up in his float plane.

We have had an excellent season with so many long time real Christmas tree lovers coming in along with many new customers. We enjoy seeing how much the younger kids have grown and finding out how everyone has been for the past year. Paul has checked our fields and has found that we still have a great supply of excellent Fraser fir, balsam fir, blue spruce, Scotch pine, and white spruce in all sizes. October News

We have had the most beautiful display of fall colours at our farm, as everyone has had throughout Ontario and Quebec. On September 14, Paul's mother Gwen Ralph passed away at the age of 103. Although she is very much missed, we have wonderful memories of a very special woman who loved nature, playing bridge, taking photographs, and above all, her family. On September 15 we hosted the Christmas Tree Farmers of Ontario annual field day. We toured our farm, had pruning and wreath making demonstrations, and shared some excellent marketing ideas. The 75 growers had lunch prepared by Emmy and Ria and by the end of the day, many new friendships had been made.

Our trees are looking beautiful and we are getting excited about the coming season!

This year we do have wholesale white spruce trees available. Please call 613 256-2014.

Ria has been busy making delicious jam and we will have all of your favourite jams and jellies in our shop. We also have our local honey, maple syrup, Fulton's spa products, tree decorations, and unique wooden reindeer made locally available.

Summer Update

Photo for Summer Update

This has been a very interesting summer at our farm. The only crop we now have is Christmas trees and we have devoted our time to growing beautiful trees. July and August have been pruning months and with the dry weather, much time was spent irrigating. We had five summer students – Kody, Thomas, Aaron, Jacob, and Josh- along with Emmy and Hannah to work on the trees. Thanks to a great crew!

Ria participated in the Almonte Fair “Christmas in July” theme with wreath-making demonstrations and crafts for kids.

Paul attended the summer field day in Hitching Post, New York, and picked up many new ideas for our farm.

On September 15, we will be hosting the Christmas Tree Farmers of Ontario field day at our farm. This is an educational day which consists of a tour, pruning demonstrations, wreath-making, equipment discussions, and much more. It is also an opportunity to discuss ways to promote the real Christmas tree and visit with fellow growers.

Summer at the Farm

We planted our new crop of trees in April and now it is time to prune and mow. To grow our trees into beautiful Christmas trees, they have to be pruned every summer. This shearing encourages fuller trees. It is a great job if you don't mind being very sticky and if you can ignore deer flies and mosquitoes!!

Ria will be making delicious jam in September. Jam makes a great hostess gift or a treat for a favourite teacher at Christmas. As Paul says, "One size fits all." To order, just call us at home at 613 256-2014 until we open.

Also watch for our selection of our gifts including local spa products from Fultons, honey, maple syrup, and more.
